What Can Ultrasound Machines do for you?

by Nicholas

The applications of ultrasound machines are numerous and commonly used for obstetrics, echocardiography and biopsy just to name a few. Ultrasound Machines is a non-invasive way to provide valuable medical details compare to traditional tools and diagnosis techniques. In other word, it has greatly helped medicine become safer and more accurate. Here are some common functions of the process.

Ultrasound machines for obstetrics provide invaluable information about a woman’s pregnancy and her growing baby. The ultrasound scanning of uterus can view the baby’s current position, gender and condition. Such procedure can identify the conception date and ensure the fetus is in healthy development. The detailed scanning able to detect any abnormalities in the development of the fetus allowing doctor to make prompt decision for necessary treatment. Amniocentesis, a needle is inserted to take amniotic fluid for analysis cannot be done so easily without the help of ultrasound. Beside, it is effective tool for identifying general health of the baby, position of the placenta, ectopic pregnancy, potential miscarriage as well as early fetal death.

Aside from obstetric reasons, the thyroid gland, breasts bladder, spleen, and eyes for the presence of foreign objects can be detected through ultrasound machine. It is not uncommon tool to check the newborn babies in term of their brain, eye, internal organ such as the appendix and liver. The machine also used during fine needle biopsy procedures. It gives an actual moving image for guiding the needle to reach the specific spot correctly.

Echocardiography is a specific type of ultrasound for heart checking. It can be used to detect congenital heart disease. This may includes complications in the large blood vessels, blood clots in the heart chambers, heart muscle damage or enlargement or cardiomyopathy and pericarditis or inflammation of the pericardium. Echocardiography comes in very handy to identify disorders of heart valves. The velocity of blood flow through the heart indirectly can be measured using Doppler echocardiography. Malfunctioning valves in the case of aortic stenosis and mitral insufficiency ca be detected as well.

The functions of ultrasound procedures are largely depend on the organ to be diagnosed as well as the condition of the patients. Such medical procedure is very simple and quicker than you think. It needs neither special requirements nor special preparations. However, the procedure is advisable to be carried out only by trained medical professional in radiology.

What You Don’t Know About Ultrasound Machines

by Nicholas

Ultrasound machines can provide invaluable information in diagnosis of diseases and conditions. It allows most disorders to be detected earlier, thus allowing treatment to start more quickly and accurately. The applications of ultrasound machines include biomedical applications as well as industrial applications. As a matter of fact, it could be considered as the most used equipment either in clinics or hospital these days. Ultrasound is far more effective and safe compared to those old techniques practiced in decades past. However, how much do we understand about the process? And do you really need it? Let’s look into it application one by one in general.

Ultrasound machines have been used for a minimum of 50 years among human beings. As we all know, cyclic sound pressure having a frequency higher than the human hearing upper limit is called ultrasound. The average lower limit is 20 kilohertz. On the other hand, the upper limit can be varying depending on individual. An accurate measurement can be obtained based on the reflection projected by the focused energy as it penetrates the intended medium. Taking photo of babies inside the uterus is one of the most popular applications of ultrasound. Medical sonography or ultrasonography is a medical imaging technique used for diagnosis. By using real time tomographic images, it can visualize internal organs, muscles and other specifics such as the structure, size and present lesions.

Ultrasound in biomedical uses is for therapeutic purposes, together with medications. Therapeutic ultrasound machines are often used in physical therapy, occupational therapy and cancer treatment. It uses more powerful sources to create local heating among body tissues. Phacoemulsification is the procedure used for treating cataracts by using focused ultrasound. High intensity focused ultrasound or HIFU is also highly effective in treating malignant and benign tumors. Abdominal ultrasound, rectal ultrasound in men and vaginal ultrasound in women is the ideal procedure in detecting pelvic abnormalities. Besides, ultrasound is a good guide tool in cosmetic surgery such as liposuction. Elastography, lipectomy, sclerotherapy and endovenous laser treatment are some of the procedures that may also involve the use of ultrasound. Read more

3d Ultrasound: Capturing the Precious Moments of Pregnancy

by Nicholas

Nowadays, many hospitals and clinics provide 3d ultrasound services to pregnant women. Pregnant women can also obtain ultrasound services from 3d ultrasound centers. Maternity hospitals, clinics and other medical facilities are embracing ultrasound technology due to the growing need among pregnant women to know the health state of their developing babies and the sex of their babies.

A mother is able know the health of the developing fetus by use of a 3d ultrasound device. With this device, doctors can be able to discover at an early stage if the developing baby has any health complications. Use of ultrasounds to check the health condition of a baby is called fetal anomaly scanning. This scanning will reveal if a baby has heart anomalies, brain anomalies among other anomalies. In the near future, elective ultrasound devices will be able to detect whether a baby has cerebral palsy.

3d ultrasounds are also normally used by many pregnant women to determine the sex of their babies. The sex of a baby can be determined with 95% accuracy using an ultrasound machine during the 20th week of the pregnancy. Determining the sex of a baby using an ultrasound machine is best done between the 20th and the 32nd week of the pregnancy. Above the 32nd week, there is a possibility that the baby may have descended down to the pelvis and it will be hard to determine the baby’s gender using an ultrasound device.

Three Dimensional Ultrasound Photo

Medical literature however reports that it is possible to determine the sex of the baby using an ultrasound as early as the 15th week of the pregnancy. The success rate at the 15th week of the pregnancy is 50%. One will have to pay for the ultrasound scanning whether it succeeds or not. In case the scanning fails to determine the sex of the baby during the 15th week, the mother will have to wait until the 17th week and carry out another scanning. From the 17th week to the 32nd week of the pregnancy, it is possible to determine the gender of a baby with an accuracy level exceeding 90%.

Apart from being used to determine the sex and health state of a baby, 3d ultrasound scanning can simply be used to see how the baby looks like and capture the baby’s moments in his/her mother’s womb. The best images of a baby’s looks can be captured between the 28th and the 32nd week of the pregnancy. Once the mother has been able to see how her baby looks like, she will be utterly convinced that she is carrying a real human being in her womb.

Most providers of 3d ultrasound services will offer moms-to-be services that will enable them capture the images of their babies. These images can be stored for memory. The images of the developing baby in the womb are precious images that should be preserved. Ultrasound centers normally use high quality equipments that will enable them to capture the best images of the developing fetus. A well experienced ultrasonographer/ultrasound technician will provide high quality images.

New advancements in the 3d ultrasound niche, has made it possible to watch a baby’s moves real time via a large screen. This can later be recorded and stored in a DVD for later viewing. With this advancement, it is now possible to show pregnant women contemplating divorce the real time movements of their babies’ in their wombs. After seeing these, these mothers will be convinced that what they are carrying in their wombs are real baby’s who have real lives. These may influence them to rethink their decision to carry out abortion. 3d ultrasound has been used by many pro life organizations to convince pregnant women not to carry out abortion. Many charitable organizations in America pay the fees for ultrasound scanning for women contemplating divorce.

The pregnancy period is a precious time not only to the pregnant mother-to-be but also to the baby in the womb. Capturing images of the developing baby using 3d ultrasound will enable the precious moments of the developing fetus to be observed and stored. These moments can be stored in 3d pictures and DVD’s.

4d Ultrasound – Know Your Baby Well

by Nicholas

There is good news for moms-to-be. You can actually view the motion pictures of your baby before he is born. This will be very useful in several ways. You can come to know about the various development stages of your baby and also know if everything is perfect. If there are any defects, it can be sorted out at an early stage itself. The normal 2d ultrasound will not be able to give you clear and perfect images of your child. The images may also require an experienced doctor to understand the features etc. However, by using the 4d ultrasound you will get clear images which can help the doctor to determine everything about your baby.

Ultrasound is also known as sonogram which is a medical test using high frequency sound waves to produce the picture of various organs in the body. For pregnant women, ultrasound is often prescribed to get the image of the fetus. A special sonogram machine is used for 4d ultrasound to take the images from different angles to reveal detailed images of the fetus like the features of the face etc. The movements made by the baby during the procedure can also be captured using the ultrasound.

Uses of 4 Dimensional Ultrasound

4d ultrasound is the latest in ultrasound technology which means 4 dimensional. It adds the element of time to 3d images which can be used to view the live action images of an unborn child. It can be used for the following procedures: to determine the age of the baby, analyze its development, evaluate multiple pregnancies, detect any kind of structural problems in the uterus, detect abnormalities in the placenta, detect abnormal bleeding, determine ectopic pregnancy, detect ovarian fibroids and locate the placenta etc.

Standard ultrasounds only produce 2 dimensional images of the fetus. During pregnancy, such pictures are often required for various purposes like evaluating the progress of the baby’s growth, to determine its gestational age and other kinds of abnormalities if any. The use of the standard ultrasound can produce the picture of the fetus. But it requires experienced doctors to identify the different body parts and features. Most of these pictures are often grainy and given to the patient also. Sometimes, a 2d image may be able to indicate a problem but it require a sophisticated 4d ultrasound to confirm and clearly identify the abnormality.

Need for 4d Ultrasound

Pregnant Woman With 4d Ultrasound Photos

Most often there will be no need to get the 4d image. However, if a mom wishes to see clear pictures of the baby, she can use the procedure. The centers perform such tests only after the gestation period of 25 weeks. The baby will be big enough to see the features clearly. Standard ultrasound images are usually ordered by doctors for various reasons. They are performed either at the clinic itself or ultrasound imaging centers. However, the 4d images do not require doctor’s orders to be performed. They are mostly done by private businesses which specialize in such procedures. The procedure may take only about 20 minutes to complete.

The images of the baby are taken by following a simple procedure. A conducive gel is applied to the mom’s abdomen. A transducer is used along the abdomen in a gliding movement. It is connected to a monitor which captures the images of the fetus and can be viewed until the ultrasound is completed. The mom also gets a video of her baby and a keepsake photograph.

Many physicians feel that the energy levels used by these ultrasounds are higher due to the high quality of images obtained. However, the US food and Drug Administration controls the level of energy used in these machines. Although the concern is not yet proven, moms who wish to have these images taken should consult their doctors about the safety before going forward with the procedure. So, before you get ready for a 4d ultrasound you can always consult your doctor and understand more details about it and then decide whether you should proceed further or not.

Portable Ultrasound Machine: Clincal And Therapeutic

by Nicholas

In the last few years, we’ve seen some serious improvements in the portable ultrasound machine. The image quality available in these units has undergone some drastic renovations. These machines are invaluable when mobility is crucial, ample space isn’t available or imaging needs to be performed in the field.

Marty Wilcox introduced the world to portable ultrasound in 1975 with his ADR 2130. Machines of today have come a long we since this bulky, cumbersome device. Weighing in at 25 lbs., with 3 linear probes and an oscilloscope monitor, these devices were a revolution in their time. Today, the archaic oscilloscope has been replaced by small TV screens with a digital interface. The heavy machines of past have been streamlined and reinvented as light, hand-held devices that operate on batteries.

These devices send high frequency sound waves through the patient’s body and provide diagnostic imaging by interpreting the physical characteristics the waves encounter. A special gel is required to achieve transference from the hand held probe to the patient’s body. These ultrasonic waves are usually over 800,000 Hz. Looking at the etymology of the word we can discern that these devices use very high pitched sound waves, emanating frequencies higher than humans or animals can audibly perceive. Incredibly, these frequencies are so high they can actually move the cells in the human body. This possibility gave way to a therapeutic consideration for ultrasound technology.

In addition to diagnostic imaging, therapeutic ultrasound devices have been a safe an effective tool used by chiropractors and physical therapists since the 1940s. Therapeutic ultrasound machines penetrate the skin by several issues and the sound waves, remarkably, massage the tissue. Deep heat is applied to the tissue. It benefits the affected area but presents no discomfort, as the heat from these sound waves is beneath the threshold of perception for the human body.

Doppler Ultrasound

by Nicholas

Modern medicine is an awe inspiring endeavor by itself. As we spend money in ever advancing areas of technology to be used with what we know about the human body the awe becomes more abundant in our lives.

One technology in particular is an advancement that will make patients more comfortable with procedures. It is called Doppler Ultrasound. This is exactly what you might think it is. It is an ultrasound technology that uses sound waves to detect things we cannot see. It uses a sonar much like that of the Navy. These sound waves penetrate the skin and bounce back to the machine which collects the data and stores it for later analysis.  Of course we know that it is used to look at your unborn baby to check for abnormalities and sometimes just to watch the perfection of a new life. Perhaps unknown to the general population is that it has other medical uses as well.

Doppler Monitor

Physicians use it to analyze the bloodflow in the human body. Many of the conditions that we are striving to eliminate are now analyzed via-Doppler ultrasound devices. This allows your physician to analyze the bloodflow in arteries and veins. The sound waves send signals to the recording device attached and tells you if there is decreased or blocked flow. For many of us with a fear of needles this is an unobtrusive way to check for health worries. Clogged or partially clogged arteries are the cause of many of the dangerous conditions we suffer in our lives. Varicose veins cause and even oxygen levels in our legs can be detected. Bloodflow to the brain and heart are two of the worst to endure. Strokes and heart attacks come on without warning most of the time. With this device if you are having a problem you need only lay still for a short time, usually about two hours, and your concerns will either be layed to rest or you will know ahead of time that you need to work with your physician to find the cure that will get you back into your normal life.

Early detection is one of the most advertised of all medical concerns. Many of the fatal blood related problems we face can be medically reduced with the use of this Doppler ultrasound device. Pregnant women are susceptible to many concerns during their pregnancy. The doppler ultrasound device can be used in office or are available to rent or purchase for home use. Your physician must approve the home use but it gives the mother more comfort if she has endured problems in the past. It puts your baby’s heart beat at your finger tips day and night.

Breast Ultrasound Scan

by Nicholas

Breast ultrasound is non-invasive and painless medical procedure. It requires you to expose the area to be examined to high-frequency sound vibrations so that any abnormalities like lumps, masses and cysts can be detected. In other words, it uses sound vibrations in order to see tissues inside the breast. The process does not involve X-rays and possibly harmful kinds of radiation, thus Breast Ultrasound Machine is considered very safe and effective.

Breast Ultrasound

Breast Ultrasound

Breast ultrasound images can identify the cause of many breast symptoms like redness, pain and swelling. And it is capable to see the features and nature of breast anomalies such as solid or fluid-filled. Therefore, doctors can determine whether the lump or tumour is cancerous or not. Of course, more tests will be required either with fluid or one without any fluid if necessary. Doppler techniques could be used to check the blood circulation in the areas as masses generally will lack of blood flow.

The ultrasound can also confirm with abnormal results found during mammography. For those people with dense breasts and who have silicone breast implant, ultrasound is good to present details accurately instead of mammogram. Besides, breast surgery and biopsy will need the guidance of ultrasound. Needle insertion procedure to drain fluids that accumulate in cysts or abscesses could be impossible without the present of ultrasound. Clear gel will be placed on intended areas. It feels a bit cold at first. You will then feel the transducer in contact with your body.

Ultrasound Massager

by Nicholas

An ultrasound massager offers a high-tech, low-impact way to treat aching muscles and loosen spasms. Standard massagers often violently shake tense muscles soft. Their noise and pounding can irritate you. Ultrasonic massagers use high frequency sound to stimulate your tissue, eliminating the noise and impacts of outdated massagers.

What is Ultrasound?

Sound vibrations travel in waves. How frequently waves follow each other is called frequency. You sense frequency in a sound’s pitch, not its volume. Science measures it in waves per second called Hertz (Hz). Most people cannot hear frequencies below 20 Hz. For comparison, a piano’s lowest note vibrates 27 times per second, or 27 Hz. Its highest note vibrates beyond 4,000 times per second, just one-fifth the highest tone you can hear. Ultrasound frequencies exceed 20,000 Hz, or 20 kilohertz (kHz). Ultrasound simply means sound vibrating faster than you hear.

Uses of Ultrasound

Though we do not hear them, ultrasonic waves still shake things, the way a booming bass speaker shakes a window. A 30 kHz frequency, for example, vibrates enough to clean tarnish from jewelry, without damaging the jewelry itself. You have probably seen an ultrasound photo of a fetus. That takes wavelengths from 2 million to 18 million Hertz, or 2 to 18 megahertz (MHz), almost 1,000 times the highest audible frequencies.

How Ultrasonic Massagers Work

Usually starting at 1 MHz, ultrasound massagers send sound waves deep into your tissue, vibrating on cellular levels. These pulses loosen your muscles, help your blood flow, and heal injuries quicker. How deep the vibrations reach has less to do with frequency than intensity. You sense intensity as volume. Just like the louder, you shout the more easily you are heard through a wall, louder ultrasound more easily penetrates solid objects. The difference is, you will never hear this because the frequency is already too high.

Preparation Prior to the Ultrasound Examination

by Nicholas
Preparation prio to ultrasound?

Any preparation prio to ultrasound?

Comparing to other traditional diagnostic techniques and technology, getting ready for ultrasound scanning doesn’t take too much effort and time. Ultrasound machines are wisely use in clinics and hospital these days. Most of the procedures require no special preparation whatsoever. However, the following are some useful guidelines for you before you taking up the medical procedure.

It is always a good practice to consult your doctor first on what you need to be ready before you heading to the clinic. You may require coming with empty stomach or perhaps a full bladder depending on the organ to be checked. For pregnancy woman, the full bladder will make the imaging better as the extra bulge displaces intestine loops. So, don’t urinate before the test and drink more water prior to the scanning. On the other hand, ultrasound scan on a liver will require patients to fast several hours before the procedure taking place.

Babies aging 1 year old and above should keep their bladder full by drinking more water before the scan. However, you should not feed babies aging 2 months old 2 hours before the test for abdominal ultrasound scan. Drinking and eating are strictly prohibited for babies aging 3 up to 12 months prior to the procedure. No food and drink intake for children from 1 to 8 years old 5-hour before the test. Six hours prior to ultrasound test, individuals above 8 years old are also prohibited to take any kind of food and drink. Read more
